Long Eaton Running Club
Long Eaton Running Club is a friendly running club with over 200 members. We are a diverse group. We have notable success in helping to get people in the local area running through the Couch-to-5k programme, we are enthusiastic supporters of our local parkrun, and we are very successful in local competition.
Club nights are on Tuesday and Thursday each week; meeting at West Park Leisure Centre from 6.15pm, with the run commencing at 6.30pm. There are usually at least two options for distance and, if you are new to the club, you will be paired with a similar-paced runner to make sure you don't get lost. We offer trial membership for 4 weeks. So if you fancy a run with us, just drop us a message to let us know you will be coming along and then make yourself known when you arrive.

Runner of the Month
Congratulations to Nikki Barker
LERC September 2024 - including Runner of the Month: Nikki Barker
September has again seen another month full of amazing LERC running exploits. Here are some stats:
· There were 98 separate race entries (this includes parkruns)
· More than 160 LERCers took part in at least one of these
· From these, 24 x LERCers raced for more than 25 miles
· 31 x LERCers set new PBs in September – and loads more set course bests…
· One LERCer, Mike Bland raced 104 miles in just one race; 25 4.16 mile laps, one each hour, braving difficult terrain in horrendous weather conditions! (and he came 5th) https://longeatonrunningclub.com/results.php?raceid=00014064
Drilling down further into some of those races:
· Wilne 10k – 70 LERCers took part, running a staggering 19 x 10k PBs between them. A big thank you here to @Ian Scarrott for the recent speed work that no doubt helped, but also acknowledging that speed work only builds upon the hard base miles people tend to have put in separately – well done to you all!
· We had the last of the County Development League meetings. As with others this year, the LERC presence was a bit sparse, but they can be a little difficult to get to – and fit into a busy schedule. Hopefully we’re able to build the attendance for these next year (more car share?). While I (partially) joked about 100m at Chip Cob Night, note there are a bunch of distances to choose from 100m through to 3k or 5k (depending on the meet). You could even have a go at some of the field events!
· Dicky Wilkinson & Andy Dickenson flew off to Spain to take part in the World Masters mountain running championships and did particularly well – particularly as Dicky was coming off the back of a bout of COVID!
· Great North Run – 8 LERC runners, including a TV superman (Reece) and an athletic banana! (Glenn) https://longeatonrunningclub.com/results.php?raceid=00013991
· Geoff Cooper took part in the world famous Ben Nevis race, up & down the nation’s highest mountain – in gruellingly hot conditions - and ran a very creditable time https://longeatonrunningclub.com/results.php?raceid=00013974
· Midland Counties 6 stages; LERC’s male A team finished as 19th club (out of 120 that started) in a prestigious event that covers a huge area of the country & includes many of the premier GB Acs / RCs: we punch above our weight! Unfortunately we weren’t able to take up the place we’d earned in the National equivalent – hopefully we’re able to do so next year. I really hope too that we can get women’s teams out for the equivalents in 2025 too; 6 stages (Spring) and 4 stages (Autumn) – run alongside the men’s 12 & 6 stages respectively.
As with other months, choosing a LERC Runner of the Month was extremely difficult, notably (but not exclusively) due to the efforts and achievements of ta number or awesome members including
Ali Harvey,Ian Calladine, Hannah Warrener, Wayne Smith & Paula Reason.
In the end though we were agreed that our Runner of the Month for September should be Nikki Barker.
While everyone in the club (everyone in the world!) has a bunch of challenges to face, most will accept I’m sure, that mothers maybe have a few more & greater challenges than most – and being a single Mum only adds to that. Just finding time & energy is tough. Many of us too are lacking in self-confidence, to a greater or a lesser extent. Nikki though is a great example to us all of being able to get over and around all that (with a bit of help – thanks Eddie!) and throw herself at some of the toughest of challenges, get to the end, come out smiling (however sheepishly) - and go again into something as tough or tougher, just a few days later.
Nikki’s September involved three extremely tough fell races, totalling about 45 miles and 7,500 ft of climbing. This included a significant PB at The Exterminator – probably the toughest of the three… Also: quite a lot of parenting! 😊
